Are we missing something?

The playgrounds are natural and man-made in Reno, where you can try a game of chance at one of the city’s casinos or make a splash at Whitewater Kayak Park along the Truckee River that flows through the Nevada city. Sitting at the base of the winter skiing and summer hiking trails of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the self-proclaimed “Biggest Little City in the World” doesn’t seem to match a moniker chosen decades ago. The population of this one-time small town now exceeds 200,000 and is Nevada’s second-largest city. Las Vegas is bigger and has more casinos in this state with legalized gambling. Hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues are plentiful, and you can also find inexpensive motels at or near downtown with weekly or monthly rates.

Motel 6 Stays

The national budget-priced Motel 6 lodging chain has three motels in Reno that offer discounts on rates with stays of seven days or longer. One is located a mile away from Circus Circus Casino in one direction and the University of Nevada campus in the other direction. Mini refrigerators and microwaves in some rooms are convenient amenities for long-term stays. A coin laundry is on the premises of these motels with free morning coffee service and no-cost local telephone calls.

An Eclectic Choice

Reno

Wildflower Village on the western edge of downtown has a unique combination of Bed & Breakfast lodgings, hostel-style motel rooms with shared bathrooms, motel rooms with kitchenettes and larger studio apartments. All are available for discounted extended-stay rates. What also makes this urban motel property different is the coffee house, pub, gardens and studios for working artists on the premises. You can watch occasional live music performances here.

Cheryl's Motel and Apartments

Located less than a block away from a downtown city bus station, Cheryl’s Motel and Apartments offers budget-minded monthly rates for small motel rooms called sleeping rooms and larger motel rooms equipped with small refrigerators, microwave ovens and television sets. The family-owned property also offers a monthly rate on furnished studio apartments and one-bedroom apartments.

At Season's Inn

Located one block off Reno’s Virginia Street Strip, where the city’s casinos, restaurants and recreation venues are clustered, Season’s Inn offers economy rates for its king, queen or double motel rooms. With a Spanish-style red tile roof and what Lonely Planet calls “homespun bedspreads,” rooms are basic with no mini fridges or microwaves. Complimentary coffee is available.

More Like Motels

Senator Apartments, operated by the extended-stay chain Siegel Suites, looks like a motel. The rooms are basically motel rooms with small refrigerators and microwave ovens. Unlike traditional apartments, no credit check or lease is required to rent these rooms by the week or month. A computer station is in the lobby of the property located near downtown.

Extended Reno Stays

The daily rate for a room at the Extended Stay America chain’s Reno property can dwindle from a mid-sized range to a more economical rate with discounts that accrue for longer weekly and monthly stays. The national lodging chain designed these rooms for long-term visits. They include workspaces and fully equipped kitchens with stoves, microwave ovens and refrigerators. A continental breakfast is included with the room, as is access to a coin-operated laundry.

Super 8 Options

Super 8 does not offer discounted rates for weekly or monthly stays at its budget-priced motel rooms, but you can get a discount for making your reservations in advance. At the Super 8 near downtown Reno, a stay includes free high-speed Internet and a continental breakfast with beverages and baked goods served on the premises each day. Some rooms have microwave ovens and mini fridges.
