The Inventory is a player's stock of carried items and equipment, available for use at all times. Unlike the contents of a Chest, the inventory is bound to the player rather than the world, and its contents will follow a player between multiple worlds and even between Multiplayer servers. The inventory is accessed by pressing the Inventory key, the binding for which varies depending on the player's platform of choice.

Items are added to the inventory as the player picks up items found in the world or takes them from a Storage Item, and can be sorted by using the Use / Attack key to pick up and place items, allowing them to be sorted between slots. An item held in the cursor in this way is treated as if the player is holding it; weapons can be used to attack, consumable items can be used, and placeable items can be placed in the world while held in the cursor. However, an item held in the cursor is treated as if it has been removed from the inventory—the space it occupied can be filled by other items, and it will be dropped if the inventory is closed. Dropping an item in this way, or dragging an item and placing it outside of the inventory, will cause that item to be dropped to the ground, which can also be achieved by pressing Throw; items dropped in this way can be picked up again after a short delay, and will remain in the world until they despawn.

Inventories are made up of multiple slots, each of which can contain one type of item. While some items—such as most weapons—require a slot to themselves, many types of item can have multiples of themselves 'stacked' into a single slot. The amount of items that can be stacked into a single slot depends on the individual item; for example, most construction blocks and walls can be stacked up to the maximum of 999 items, but potion types vary, with most health potions stacking to 30 and mana potions to 50 or 75 per slot. When a stack is filled, further items of the same type will take up a new slot in the inventory. The Open / Activate key can be used to pick up a single item from a stack of many; in this way, stacks can be divided.

Different sections of the inventory serve different purposes, and may be limited in what they can hold in their slots. Their functions and potential contents are detailed below.

Inventory Sections[edit edit source]

Main Inventory (40 slots)[edit edit source]

The primary storage section of the inventory is made up of four rows of ten slots that can hold any item. Items picked up will be placed in this area for safekeeping, starting from the bottom right. Holding items here will usually have no effect. Items kept here or on the Hotbar can be favorited by using the Use / Attack key while holding Alt; favorited items cannot be dropped, 'quick trashed' (automatically placing items in the trash utilizing ⇧ Shift), or deposited into a storage item using quick stack. However, favorited items can still be manually placed in the trash, which will automatically be unfavorited when that happens.

Hotbar (10 slots)[edit edit source]

A single row of ten, each of which corresponds to the 0-9 keys. While the inventory is closed, one of these ten slots is always highlighted, and pressing the Use / Attack key will cause that highlighted item to be used. Pressing a slot's matching number key will cause it to be highlighted, and the highlight can be shifted by scrolling with the mouse wheel. Clicking an item on the hotbar will usually select it, but a small lock icon to the left of the hotbar can disable this functionality. Items with no use can still be placed here for storage.

Crafting Menu[edit edit source]

The player's main means of item production, the crafting menu appears whenever the player's inventory is open, including when they have opened a chest or other storage item. It shows as a list of potentially craftable items, displayed based on the player's proximity to appropriate crafting stations and the presence of needed materials in the inventory. Approaching a crafting station will add its recipes to the player's list; however, recipes will not be displayed if the player does not possess all of the ingredients. If the player has opened a chest (etc), all items in the chest will be counted as 'possessed' for recipes.

While the inventory is open, the mouse wheel will scroll through the crafting recipes slowly. Clicking the small hammer icon will open a grid containing all currently available recipes, and selecting one will center it on the menu. Clicking the centered item will remove the needed materials from the player's inventory and craft it. While items are crafted one at a time, the cursor holds the finished products as if they were picked up from the inventory, and can craft repeatedly up to the individual item's stack limit.

Coins (4 slots)[edit edit source]

Four slots for the four types of Coins. These slots can only hold coins.

Ammo (4 slots)[edit edit source]

Four slots for different types of Ammunition. When using weapons that require ammo, ammo items in this area will be used before those in the main inventory, starting from the top slot. Only Bullets, Arrows and Rockets will automatically move to the Ammo slots, but any item that can be used as ammo can be placed here manually, including the Endless Musket Pouch, Endless Quiver, Sand, Gel, Fallen Stars, Coins, and Seed (see other ammunition for the complete list). Notably, because of the way Wrenches, Fishing Rods, and the Clentaminator work, Wire, Bait, and Solution can also be placed in these slots.

Trash (1 slot)[edit edit source]

Not to be confused with the item.

A single slot for item disposal. A single item can be placed in this slot, and will remain there until it is removed by the player. Items can be taken out of the trash at any time with no consequences. However, when another item is placed in the Trash slot, the item currently in the Trash—even items that would normally stack—is permanently removed. Items destroyed by the trash cannot be retrieved in any way. The Trash slot is emptied when the character dies or leaves the world.

Armor (3 slots)[edit edit source]

Slots for the player's head, torso and legs. Armor of the appropriate type can be equipped to each slot, which will confer its effects—usually an increase in Defense—to the player. Worn armor will appear on the player's sprite.

Vanity Armor (3 slots)[edit edit source]

Also known as the Social Slots. These slots change the visual appearance of the player's head, torso and legs. While these slots accept the same types of items as the armor slots, items placed here are entirely visual and will not modify the player's stats or generate any additional effects. Their appearance will, however, override the corresponding armor slot, allowing the player to conceal their armor if it is not to their aesthetic preference.

For players unconcerned about aesthetics, these slots can be used to store an alternate set of armor. For example, a character could wear a set of melee armor while equipping a set of mage armor in the vanity slots, in order to be able to switch to the magic-boosting armor when needed.

Armor Dye (3 slots)[edit edit source]

Another aesthetic modifier for the armor slots. Dyes placed in these three slots will recolor the displayed item in that slot, meaning that Dyes will recolor the player's armor if no vanity items are worn.

Accessories (5 slots)[edit edit source]

Five slots for accessories. Only accessories may be placed in these slots, and only here will their effects occur. Unlike armor, any accessory may be placed in any slot, even items that would seemingly override one another—it is possible to wear both Hermes Boots and Rocket Boots at the same time. Many of these items will appear on the player's sprite, in order from top to bottom. Each Accessory slot has a small eye icon on the top right; clicking this icon will toggle the appearance of the accessory in that slot on and off. This has no effect on the accessory's function, however; hidden accessories will still work as normal, and activated accessories such as the Shield of Cthulhu may reappear while in use.

Using a Demon Heart will make a sixth accessory slot available. This slot is only usable in Expert mode—entering a normal world will cause the item in this sixth slot to stop functioning, and if removed it cannot be replaced until the player returns to an Expert world.

Vanity Accessories (5 slots)[edit edit source]

Similar to the vanity armor slots, these accessory slots are purely aesthetic. Accessories equipped here will override those in the matching slot, even if they occupy different areas of the player's sprite—equipping a Winter Cape as a vanity item opposite a Bundle of Balloons will cause the Balloons to no longer display. However, some items, such as Wings, will still override their vanity slots while in use.

The sixth accessory slot unlocked by the Demon Heart will also unlock a corresponding vanity slot. This slot is subject to the same Expert mode restrictions as its functional counterpart.

For players unconcerned about aesthetics, these slots can be used as storage for an additional 5 (or 6) accessories. Accessories do not function while in a vanity slot, but storing an occasionally useful accessory in a vanity slot makes it easy to switch that accessory into a main slot when it is needed.

Accessory Dye (5 slots)[edit edit source]

Similar to armor dyes, equipping Dyes to these slots will recolor the displayed accessories in adjacent slots.

Again, the sixth accessory slot unlocked by the Demon Heart will unlock a corresponding accessory dye slot.

Equipment (5 slots)[edit edit source]

It provides five additional slots for miscellaneous equipment: a Pet, a Light Pet, a Minecart, a Mount and a Hook. Each slot can only be used to hold the corresponding item type, and only one of each. Only Minecarts are expressly required to be placed in these slots in order to function; grappling hooks, as well as activation items for mounts and pets, are all normal usable items, and will even respond to their respective hotkeys while in the Hotbar.

Pets and Light Pets have small eye icons similar to those on the accessory slots that, when toggled off, will prevent them from appearing. However, unlike the purely visual effect this icon has on accessories, these pets are actually unsummoned, and will not reappear by default until the slot is made visible again.

Equipment Dye (5 slots)[edit edit source]

These dyes will only apply to the equipped items found in the corresponding slots. Applying Dye to a light pet can change the color of its sprite, but the light's color will always remain the same.

Inventory Sub-Menus[edit edit source]

As the inventory serves the player's main heads-up display, a handful of additional menus unrelated to items in the inventory can be accessed through it.

Camera Mode[edit edit source]


A special mode for capturing images, accessed through clicking the Camera icon above the armor slots. The captured images can then be accessed in the captures folder located within the Terraria folder.

Housing Menu[edit edit source]

A menu for managing the placement of NPCs, accessed through clicking the small house icon above the armor slots. The NPC list goes downwards from the right to the left-hand side in the order the NPCs were implemented into the game.

Notes[edit edit source]

  • If all Hotbar and Storage slots are occupied, new items will not be picked up.
  • Only items that appear in the main inventory will be available for Crafting. However, on the Template:Desktop version, you can also use items in the Storage item that you currently have open to craft.
  • Objects in your inventory will carry over to other servers and worlds. This also includes equipped armor, coins in the coins slots, and ammo in the ammo slots.
  • If you need more inventory room, you can move an item into the trash to hold it there for a little while. Be careful though, if you place another item over it in the trash or exit the game, you will lose the item. Also, picked up items can not be collected into the trash.
  • Another way to increase inventory slots is to always carry a Piggy Bank, Safe, and/or a Defender's Forge in your main inventory, because those three can be carried with items inside. Note: You can not place a Piggy Bank on the ground, therefore you will also need to carry a Work Bench or a Table or a Platform. To save the inventory space, you can also use a Template:Eil.
  • On the Template:IconWii U, the player's character will jump if you tap the close button rather than pressing Template:G.

In order to beat No Man’s Sky, you need slots. Lots of additional slots.

No Man’s Sky is a game where you travel the universe in search for the center of the galaxy. To do that you need to upgrade your ship, your weapons, and your suit.

To achieve that, you need to upgrade your inventory. No Man’s Sky isn’t a terribly simple game to tell you the truth.

No Man’s Sky allows players the freedom to play the game as they like. They can go around killing everything in sight including flora and fauna of a given planet and the planet itself, though that does alert the sentinels nearby to come and attack you.

But you can also play the game by collecting stuff on each planet in order to upgrade your ship, weapons and suit too, and to better prepare yourself to execute, or even complete, your journey to the center of the universe in the least amount of time.

Though, you would still attract those annoying sentinels if you keep harvesting each planet for its natural resources. It’s almost like No Man’s Sky developer team thought: “Hye Guys, this game seems like a lot of fun. Let’s ruin it by constantly bombarding No Man’s Sky players with these pesky sentinels on every planet in the universe.”

In any case, the best way to upgrade all of your equipment in No Man’s Sky is to increase the number of inventory slots that you have available.

Make no mistake; upgrading your inventory is probably the most important aspect of No Man’s Sky if you want to progress in the game.

An upgraded inventory in No Man’s Sky allows players to carry more of everything. In other words, you would be able to earn more money from activities such as mining and trading.

When you have more money from these activities, you’ll be able to prepare yourself better for a variety of different situations which No Man’s Sky will test you with.

As mentioned before, No Man’s Sky is a very unique game in the sense that you can follow multiple paths within the game from the beginning.

So in order to make yourself more resistant to a diverse range of atmospheric conditions, and to fight off those annoying sentinels without getting killed consistently, you need more inventory slots.

No Man’s Sky already gives you some in order to set you up on your way to exploring more planets and star systems. But the game also requires you to add slots to your already existing inventory slots.

In No Man’s Sky, you can easily add inventory slots to your exosuit and your starship by forming a plan before you set out to collect materials in the wild.

Additional slots will allow you to augment your existing pieces of technology in order to make them more efficient.

Along with that, you can also add more modification slots to your weapon. In No Man’s Sky, your weapon is basically known as a multi-tool. So do keep that in mind as you further progress in No Man’s Sky.

How to Get Additional Inventory Slots For Your Exosuit

In order to level up your Exosuit, you need to seek out Signal Scanners. Signal Scanners are essentially the little boxes that project orange beams of light into the air.

These Signal Scanners are located on individual planets and their moons.

In order to hack into these Signal Scanners, you need to use a Bypass Chip on them.After that you need to choose “search for Shelters” option.

Bypass chips are, fundamentally, items that are very useful in No Man’s Sky because they can be used to hack Signal Scanners among other equipment.

No Man’s Sky players can craft their own Bypass Chips using a recipe. Don’t worry about having to search for this recipe since, No Man’s Sky provides the recipe for Bypass Chips to the players from the very beginning of the space-exploration game.

To craft Bypass Chips you need to have an empty slot. Then you need to get hold of 10 Plutonium and 10 Iron in order to craft a Bypass Chip in that empty slot.

Do remember that hacking Signal Scanners is a vital part of No Man’s Sky since these pieces of equipment guide you to the most valuable facilities, treasures and yeah, more inventory slots.

When you have crafted your Bypass Chip and have hacked into a Signal Scanner, you’ll have the chance of discovering a Drop Pod. No need to go into the details of what a Drop Pod is. You’ll know it when you see it in the game.

You will find your Exosuit upgrade inside the Drop Pod. And when you have upgraded your Exosuit, No Man’s Sky will give you an additional inventory slot for your Exosuit.

On a side note, the game will provide you with your first Exosuit upgrade for free. For further upgrades, you’ll need to pay in Units.

Not only that, but you’ll also have to pay more Units to upgrade your Exosuit as you level up further in No Man’s Sky.

If you think that the above-described “procedure” is too hard then there is good news: there is an alternative way you can upgrade your inventory slots.

In order to add more slots to your Exosuit, this time, you’ll need an AtlasPassv1.

You can get an Atlas Pass in two ways.

First, after visiting your very first Atlas Interface, No Man’s Sky will present you with a Space Anomaly when you jump to the next star system.

Then, all you need to do is talk to Gek inside in order to revive your AtlasPassV1. Do take note, that this scenario will only play out if you have completed the required number of milestones.

The second method to get an AtlasPassV1 is to craft it. You can craft one for 25 Iron and 10 Heridium.

But it’s not that simple though. You’ll also need a blueprint to craft an AtlasPassV1. You’ll get that blueprint after your very first visit to Space Anomaly.

With the AtlasPassV1 in place, you can simply open the locked door that is situated in the landing area of a space station.

You’ll find it opposite to the open door when you’re inside a space station.

After entering through the unlocked door, you’ll be able to see an Exosuit upgrade station. That is the station where you’ll get your extra inventory slot for your Exosuit.

The Exosuit upgrade station works exactly the same way as the station you found in drop pods.

Bonus Guide: How to Get Off Your First Planet In No Man’s Sky

Of course, in order to follow all the steps mentioned before, you first need to get off the first planet.

Many No Man’s Sky players have reported having faced problems in getting off the first planet.

Carefully read the following steps to not get stranded on your first planet.

Here is what you need to do in order to get off your first planet in No Man’s Sky.

No Man’s Sky will start with you standing close to your wrecked ship. Your first step, always, should be to search for materials in the nearby campsite.

Gather as much material as you can.

Secondly, your ship has two broken component: Pulse Engine and Launch Thruster. You must fix the booster first.

For that, gather the required amount of Iron from rocks in the surrounding area and then use your Mining Beam to craft three Carite Sheets.

Don’t worry about crafting Carite Sheets since once you have collected enough raw material from your surrounding, crafting Carite Sheets would be a piece of cake.

To craft a Carite Sheet, just point towards an empty inventory slot and select Carite Sheets from the resulting menu.

Now you’re good to go since you’ve made a solid start to your No Man’s Sky journey. All you need to do now is to fix your Launch Thruster. Hover over the launch Thruster in the menu and after that, select “repair”.

After that, search for more Iron near surrounding rocks. You’ll also need some Carbon, which can be had from plant life, for this next bit.

When you have enough Iron and Carbon, go to your menu and fix your broken tools.

If you have followed the steps correctly, then you should have access to the Scanner (L3) now.

Use your Scanner to search and collect Zinc along with Heridium and Iron in order to craft more Carite Sheets.

You’ll need more Carite Sheets to fix your Pulse Drive. To make it easy to find raw materials, remember that Zinc pops up on the screen with a Yellow icon when it is nearby. Similarly, Plutonium pops up with a Blue icon.

More inventory slots will lead to more upgrades for your ship, your weapon and your exosuit

You can find both of these near stemmed plants. Sometimes you’ll find Zinc and Plutonium on stemmed plants rather than near them.

Your hub should guide you to Heridium with the help of a relevant icon. Use your scanner generously in order to gather the maximum amount of material in the least amount of time.

Also, try not to run out of red elements because then you’ll have no other way to recharge your mining beam.

After collecting enough Heridium, Zinc, and Iron, craft some more Carite Sheets and then proceed to repair your spaceship’s engine.

Now all you need to do is to find some fuel for your newly restored ship.

You’ll need Plutonium for your spaceship’s Booster and Thamium9 for the Pulse. You can easily gather enough of both by using your scanner in the nearby area.

Congratulations. You now have a fully working spaceship.

Get in your spaceship and hit R2 to take off. Simultaneously, point the nose of your spaceship towards the sky in order to leave your first planet.

You can accelerate your spaceship with R2 (or with equivalent keyboard button) and can also use “boost” by pressing the circle button.

Keep zooming upwards until you start to see some stars.

Great. You’re now in space.

Now go out there and explore ‘em all.
